Anna Nagar Nagarathar Sangam was founded in the year 1989, with Mr. MR. Ramiah, as President. After functioning for a few years it became defunct. In the year 2002, Mr. M. Pethachie, Mr. PL. Pitchappan, Mr.V.Krishnan, Dr.M. Palaniappan and Mr. M. Sundaram put in a lot of efforts to see the revival of the Sangam.
This Sangam has been functioning since then in an efficient manner catering to the various needs of the Society, in general, and our community, in particular. Religious & Social tours to places like Varanasi, Rishikesh, Delhi, Courtallam, Vaishno Devi, Gaya, Thiruvannamalai, Golden Temple, Moogambikai Temple and many other places in Karnataka and Kerala, have been organised so far.
Sangam has organized an eye camp led by Dr. Krishnan, an eminent eye surgeon at Sri Devi Hospital.
We celebrate all our traditional festivals like, Pillaiyar Nonbu, Mahar Nonbu, Sangabhishegam, Thiruvilakku Poojai etc., every year.
Those who have honoured us by their gracious presence include Deivathiru M.Ct. Muthiah Chettiar, Thiruvalargal A.C. Muthiah,S.Rm.Pl. Subramaniam Chettiar, Kavignar Sella Ganapathi, P. Lakshmanan Chettiar, Abhirami Ramanathan Chettiaar and other dignitaries in our various functions.
In the Annual Day celebrations, Sangam used to encourage young children by conducting competitions in various disciplines, awarding prizes for the academically brilliant students and organizing lectures by eminent persons.
While auctioning of many items on the Pillaiyar Nonbu Festival Day is the main source of income for the Sangam, we cannot but mention and thankfully acknowledge here that there have been many sponsors and donors for almost all the events organized by us.
Sangam had the honour of having Mr. M. Pethachie, Mr. L.St. Subbiah and Mr. PR. Nagappan as our Presidents during the past five years. Currently, the Management team is headed by Mr. M. Dhanalakshminarayanan, an ex-bank official.
Apart from celebrating our traditional festivals and organizing tours, the present team proposes to organize medical camps, issue identity cards to all our members, to have a register of members willing to donate blood on emergencies, and to conduct meetings by inviting scholars in various disciplines to address our members.
Mr. Sella Ganapathy, an eminent poet, in his address in one of our Annual Day functions, suggested that we establish a college of higher education to serve the needs of our community. While we acknowledge that this is a Herculean task, we have decided to launch this project and are making sincere efforts to contact the officials of the Government and the many stalwarts belonging to our community in the field of education to know more about the formalities, procedures etc. We sincerely hope that our efforts in this direction will bring us success.
The membership of sangam is open to all Nagarathars irrespective of their place of residence. The life membership Subscription is Rs.501/- (one time)
We seek cooperation of all nagarathars and invite valuable suggestions to serve the Society, in general and our community, in particular in the best manner possible.
